Spotted Gadgets: Mozilla Firefox OS Phone

The Geeksphone Keon

The Geeksphone Keon

I’ve been on a lookout for a new mobile platform to experiment with. After years of being a Windows Mobile fanboy, I decided to try out Palm OS, BlackBerry OS, became at home with Android for 3 years until I switched to iOS. Then I saw fellow Mapalad (defunct Philippine Palm Users Group) member Bob Reyes tweeting about his Boot-to-Gecko experiments with various Android smartphones. It got me curious and followed his tweets and twitpics for the next several months.
Earlier this year, Mozilla announced its plans to release its Firefox OS phones through different carriers of different countries (SMART has already announced their support in this Press Release). Bob received his developer preview phones with Firefox OS after the announcement.

Bob and I met during the recent Social Media Day with U.S. Ambassador Harry K. Thomas meetup, and I was pretty excited upon hearing that he brought his Firefox OS phone for us to play with. The Firefox phone he brought that night was a Geeksphone Keon. It’s a small phone with a button that is similar to the iPhone with an orange backcover, which caught my attention because I wanted to have an orange phone.

Bob said he will arrange for a review unit to be sent to me for review. For now, I’m planning to review and update my HTML skills so I can start developing apps for the Firefox OS.

(Thanks Bob for letting us play the Keon!)
