Sophos’ 5 Tips for Safekeeping Data this World Backup Day

After losing important files to computer crashes back in the early 2000s, I learned to backup my files on the PC, phone and PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). Throughout the years, I became more and more meticulous of the backups I’ve made, from making several versions of it to encrypting the files so nobody would be able to open them. Being quite a backup freak, I’ve stumbled a blog post from Sophos’ 5 Tips for Keeping your Data Safe this World Backup Day. First of all, I didn’t know today is World Backup Day, so I learned something new. Second, and more importantly, some of these tips are good reminders because I honestly don’t implement them anymore because these files are mostly in my home. I know, it’s not supposed to be an excuse.

Here are the 5 Tips by Sophos:

  1. Don’t treat backing up simply as “something you do in case of ransomware”
  2. Don’t leave backups where crooks can find them
  3. Don’t make backups that everyone can read
  4. Don’t neglect the “restore” part of the process
  5. Don’t put it off until tomorrow

I am sometimes guilty of nos. 2 and 3, and up to now I am unable to open a file I encrypted way back in 2008 just because I forgot the password! What I’m totally guilty of is no. 5. I’m sure a lot of you are guilty of these as well.

Lastly, don’t wait for World Backup Day to remind you to safekeep your files. Be meticulous! In this day and age, anybody can get into your files even by remote, so better make sure to practice these tips everyday!
