Smart Communications launched yesterday a new service that would be considered a “game-changer” in online music service. In partnership with MCA Music, a Universal Music Group International Company, Smart Music will offer 3 million tracks exclusively available to over 70 million subscribers of Smart, Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular. According to the Philippines’ leading wireless service provider, this deal with the number one music company is the first in the world.

Compared to other online music service, Smart Music will offer music downloads for as low as Php 15 per track, while new releases will be sold at Php 20 for each track. These very affordable rates are roughly half of the prices offered by other online music stores. And instead of using credit cards or other online payment methods, Smart subscribers can pay for their music purchases with their prepaid credits or charged to their postpaid plans. No app is needed so any device, whether a smartphone, tablet or laptop can be used to log on to www.smart.com.ph/music and download their choice of music.

Universal Music Group International and MCA Music welcomed the partnership, citing the company’s own business strategy of offering more of its music tracks online.

“With the number of subscribers Smart has across the country, we’re virtually rolling out millions of retail outlets right in the hands of our consumers,” said Ricky Ilacad, president of MCA Music. “We at UMGI and MCA Music are excited to bring our extensive roster of global and local artists closer to every Filipino music lover.”

Aside from music content distribution, the partnership also allows all marketing initiatives by MCA to be offered exclusively to Smart, including concerts, meet and greets, merchandise.

“In September for example, MCA Music will bring one of its prime artists Rihanna for a concert here in the Philippines, and Smart will be a major presentor, bringing to the Filipinos not just the show, but the whole music experience through our group’s converged services,” said Charles Lim, Executive Vice President and Head of Wireless Consumer Business for Smart.

We will feature how Smart Music works in our next post. Stay tuned for it.
