First Look: ROG Strix G531GW SCAR III Unboxing and First Impressions

Last summer, ASUS Republic of Gamers announced a barrage of new gaming laptops, from the improved Strix line to the expanded Zephyrus line. ASUS Philippines sent us one of their new ROG laptops to review, something I’ve been familiar with for the past couple of years. The ROG Strix G531GW SCAR III has just arrived in our studio and we will be evaluating this laptop for the next two weeks. For now, we will do the obligatory unboxing and give our first impressions.

You can view the ROG Strix G531GW SCAR III Unboxing Video here:

The packaging comes in a big box, which insinuates that when someone purchases the SCAR III, he will get more stuff other than the laptop itself.

A new ROG backpack is included! Other than the backpack, the package comes with a ROG Gladius II, ROG GC21 Webcam, and the ROG Keystone. You can see these items in the unboxing video.

The lid of the SCAR III is made of aluminum with a gunmetal grey finish (the Hero is in midnight black.) While the cover looks the same as the previous SCAR versions, the bottom features a unique asymmetrical cut instead of the trapezoid to allow more airflow to pass through. I am not certain though on how this new design could help, but we’ll check on that.

The bottom looked similar to the BMW Concept gaming laptop we saw last May in #COMPUTEX2019. Apparently, ROG borrowed some designs from that collaboration and applied it to the SCAR III.

The laptop is around 26.2 mm thick with the lid closed and weighs 2.85 kg. Having used the ROG Zephyrus S GX531 since November 2018, I am not used to lug around a thick and heavy laptop anymore. However, the SCAR III is not just a thick and heavy gaming laptop, it actually packs a lot of power!

The variant we got has a 15.6″ screen display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time for ultra-smooth gameplays. An Intel Core i9 processor powers up this puppy and if that’s not enough, NVIDIA’s latest RTX 2070 GPU is included in the mix! We already did the benchmarks and we can’t wait to show you the results in the full review.

The SCAR III also comes with a ROG Keystone. When attached, the Keystone automatically sets up the gaming profiles and activates the secret folder of the user. We will also check this out for the next two weeks.

We will be posting our full review of the ROG Strix G531GW SCAR III after two weeks.

The ROG Strix SCAR III is available at ROG SM Mall of Asia and ROG Concept Stores Nationwide.
