DR’s Choice Top 10 Smartphones of 2015

I haven’t verified this yet, but I would like to believe that we have reviewed a lot of mobile devices in 2015. Because of this, I would like to give recognition to those that stand out. It was always my plan to release my Top devices list which I started in 2013. We didn’t get to publish my top 10 list for 2014, so let me make up for that as I am going to post my Top 10 Smartphones of 2015.

How did I determine these top 10 phones? Simple. If I really love using it, and I highly recommend for others to buy it, then it’s in my Top 10. Therefore, these 10 phones that made it in my list were awarded with my DR’s Choice seal of approval.

So which smartphones are part of DR’s Choice for 2015? Here they are!

10. STARMOBILE KNIGHT LUXE

Starmobile Knight Luxe DRChoice

I was in awe when I first saw the Starmobile Knight Luxe last May. In spite of its high-end features like an aluminum frame, bright AMOLED screen, large storage, and a Samsung ISOCELL camera, the price only cost less than Php 8,000.00. It’s one of the best value-for-money smartphone during that time. Heck, when I guested in GMA News TV’s Pop Talk, it was the only phone I gave a perfect score! Check the video below:

9. CHERRY MOBILE ANDROID ONE G1

CM A1 G1

Cherry Mobile released 2 Android One smartphones in 2015: the Cherry Mobile One  and the G1. The G1 has better specs which power users have wished for the One to have. I loved it so much that it became my backup phone, kicking out my One from my gear bag. It recently had an update for Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) keeping true to their promise. Also, you can’t go wrong with the G1 because it only costs Php 5,990.00.

8. ASUS ZENFONE 2 LASER

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser DRC

Asus released A LOT of Zenfone 2 variations, and the good news for me is, they’re all good! When I was handed the Zenfone 2 Laser, I never thought that it would live up to my expectations. I know its power is no match to the original Zenfone 2 (Qualcomm VS Intel) but my golly it gets the job done. And it takes better pictures than the original Zenfone 2. This was the biggest reason why my Zenfone 2 took a back seat in my smartphone usage and used this one instead.

7. ASUS ZENFONE SELFIE

Asus Zenfone Selfie DRC

The Asus Zenfone Selfie is actually quite similar to the Zenfone 2 Laser. I’m including it in my Top 10 list because it has the Best SELFIE Camera in the market. There are a lot of features to play with the 13 Megapixel front camera and it can even make my face look thin!

6. IPHONE 6S

I never thought I’m including this in my list, so why is the iPhone 6s part of my Top 10 Choices? First, the camera keeps on getting better. I stopped bringing my DSLR and just used my iPhone 6s to take pictures during events. It’s also great for taking videos. One time, fellow tech blogger and buddy Jam of JAMOnline.ph and I decided to record for an episode of The CP Republic with my iPhone 6s. We were both surprised by the superb video quality that we thought of ditching the DSLR and use the 6s as our camcorder.

Another thing I like are the Live Photos. This “Harry Potter” feature was really useful whenever I want to relive the moments I took those pictures.

If you want to get an iPhone 6s, be sure to get it from SMART!

5. CHERRY MOBILE FLARE X

CM Flare X DRC

It was the first Flare to be priced beyond the Flare price range, but at Php 6,999 I think it’s really worth it. I used to harp about the Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Plus but the Flare X is much more of a better deal. I felt right at home with the Flare X and it was my primary phone for quite a while. Its performance is something I’m really proud of, no hiccups whatsoever and it takes really good pictures. Also, the Flare X will have its much awaited Lollipop update while the Cosmos One Plus is stuck in KitKat.

By the way, after using a lot of Flares since the first model came out in 2012, I consider the Cherry Mobile Flare X as the “Best Flare Ever!”

4. ASUS ZENFONE 2

Asus Zenfone 2 DRC

Asus was hell bent on increasing its presence in every region’s smartphone market. It got everybody excited with the announcement of the Zenfone 2. It was the first smartphone to have 4GB of RAM powered by an Intel Atom processor with 32 & 64GB variants. Eventually, they released the Asus Zenfone 2 Deluxe with a whopping built-in storage of 128GB! I love playing games on the Zenfone 2! It gave me the smoothest experience quite close to playing on an iPhone. Their pricing is also very competitive which is a threat to the likes of Samsung and LG.

3. HUAWEI G8

Huawei G8 DRC

Surprise, surprise! This may be the only Top 10 list that would include this marvelous phone from Huawei. Say what you want to say, but the Huawei G8 deserves to be in my list. I am very impressed with its hardware, very solid but gorgeously designed. I loved to have the Mate 7 before but I thought the G8 would do, and even though Huawei will release newer Mate phones, I think I can already settle for the G8. Aside from the performance, its camera takes really great pictures even in low light conditions. Friends who have seen the G8 as well as the pictures I’ve taken with it were really impressed too. With an SRP of Php 18,900, diba pwede na?!

2. SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 5

SGS Note 5 DRC

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was the first runner up in my Top 5 list in 2013. If I had the time to post my 2014 Top 10 list, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 would be on the Top Spot. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is the most elegant Note released thanks to its shiny aluminum frame. The S-Pen is still very useful though what worries me is the mechanism that requires the user to push the back of the pen for it to be ejected from the silo. I hope it doesn’t easily break. I love everything about the Galaxy Note 5! Even though I already got an iPhone 6s, the Note 5 still became my primary phone for weeks and I never wanted to put it down. However, I think there’s a better phone than the Note 5, and that is…

1. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 EDGE+

SGS6 Edge+ DRC

I own a Samsung Galaxy S6 and I love it… until I was loaned a review unit of the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Despite of its size, I never thought it would be lightweight. I also found it easier to grip than my S6 or its smaller sibling the S6 Edge. Basically, it’s like using a Galaxy Note 5 without a stylus, but with a double-edged screen which I hoped to be useful but it seems that developers weren’t interested to create apps for it. Still, it has cutting edge looks which makes people look at you with envy. Its camera is loads better than the Galaxy S5, and I am always at awe whenever I review the photos or play the videos I took with the S6 Edge+.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ is my Top Choice for Smartphones in 2015!
