Apple iPhone SE 2020: $399 Flagship Killer, Best of Mid-Range Smartphones, PH Price Announced

Apple just dropped the iPhone SE 2020 for an approximate price of PHP 26,490 with an iPhone 8 build, iPhone 11 internals, and an iPhone XR single camera system.

Apple’s timing and market understanding couldn’t have been more perfect. Seriously. Apple led the pack into breaking than $1,000 milestone for flagships and now they’re bringing a mid-range less than $500. And that refresh is with all the significant recent specs, to the point it’s making mid-range competitors like the OnePlus 7T, Google Pixel 3a, and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro have lackluster performances. Especially that it’s including the A13 Bionic Processor that is as fast or even faster the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865.

The iPhone SE 2020 is that one iPhone that would change the market dynamics once again. Apple started dabbling into lower prices with the 2018 6th Gen iPad and it’s just getting better. The first iPhone SE was way back in 2016 but the awesome refresh in that four years is very welcome.

First off, the build. Apple’s listening very well to consumers now that the iPhone SE is compact to the core with an iPhone 8 build. We can get just why Apple heard its users crystal clear since this display size is Apple’s best selling yet. Back then the iPhone 8 was already the compact budget phone. The iPhone SE is responding to that with reinvigorated specs though arguably some of it is similar to the iPhone 8.

The fact remains that with the A13 bionic processor alone, the iPhone SE has a longer lifespan, better cameras, and a bigger value. The iPhone 8 starts at 64GB for approximately PHP 25,000 ($449) and for the same price you can get an iPhone SE with 128GB. It also starts on the latest IOS 13.

The iPhone SE does have a comparatively older design than the newer iPhones with its bezels and home button. The build doesn’t support Apple’s exemplary Face ID and goes back to just the Touch ID. It’s noteworthy however, that it’s the tightest iPhone with the A13 processor and an iPhone XR camera.

Apple’s iPhone XR was also marketed to be an economical smartphone in 2018. It was put side to side with the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max that was PHP 54,045 ($999) starting. A feature that made the iPhone XR cheaper was its watered- down screen. The same thing is somewhat happening with the iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE has 4.7-inch IPS LCD Retina HD Display like the iPhone 8 with a 326 pixels per inch sharpness. This display still can present the entire P3 color gamut. Upgrades from the iPhone 8 start with the included TrueTone technology and the added Haptic Touch system that was just available with the iPhone 11. It also retains the IP67 dust- and water-resistant providing a degree of security on its durability.

It has the iPhone XR’s main camera making it only carry a single camera system. However, Apple’s camera capabilities never really let up. So even if it’s a single camera there are many extra abilities to it courtesy of the A13 and recent iPhone developments.

The iPhone SE holds a 12MP (f1.8) rear camera lens including a flash that’s capable of A13-boosted Smart HDR photography, optical and cinematic stabilization (4K videos at 60fps), and portrait mode with Apple’s latest monocular depth sensing. With all those ranges of abilities it’s also proving to be better than the iPhone XR’s camera to the point Apple’s confirming it to be their best single- sensor lens.

Apple’s iPhone SE has a single camera that launches off from the iPhone XR’s legacy to the eventual significant developments more than a year’s difference can give. The front camera is 7MP (f2.2) but it’s run by the recent algorithmic upgrades like its rear. Meaning, it’s also capable of the same portrait mode.

Apple is still giving the iPhone SE wireless charging and fast- charging capabilities. It’s capable of full charge in an hour with fast charging. However, what’s in the box is only a 5W lightning port charger making fast charging optional and not a guarantee. The iPhone SE supports Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit LTE despite still not following the 5G trend. Apple hasn’t given a specific battery size but most likely it will follow what the iPhone 8 has which is about 1,821 mAh.

To round it all up, for approximately PHP 26,490 ($399) you can get a 5.45-inch Apple iPhone SE with a 4.7-inch IPS LCD Retina HD TrueTone Display, the A13 Bionic processor, 64GB storage, 12MP (f1.8) main snapper, 7MP (f2.2), on IOS 13, dual-SIM, fast charging, wireless charging, and Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit LTE support. Great features include IP67 dust and water resistance and Haptic Touch.

Even without a review we can say that the Apple iPhone SE is quite the deal especially when comparing it to recent smartphones. It follows its SE predecessor quite ideally by keeping it compact and budget-friendly with all the latest specs. Its price of all is what’s best that it offers long-time iPhone users an iPhone more familiar and cheaper experience. For new users, a gateway iPhone to the Apple ecosystem.

A good price point difference is that you can get an Apple iPhone SE at PHP 26,490, an Apple Watch Series 3 at PHP 11,990, and an Apple Airpods 2nd Generation at PHP 11,790 and it will still cost less than the Samsung Galaxy S20 at PHP 55,000 ($999).

We’re not yet seeing other competitive android smartphones for this price and spec combo from Apple except for maybe the Samsung Galaxy A51 5G. The yet-to-arrive Google Pixel 4a might be a competitor too but for now the iPhone SE takes the cake. Moreover the iPhone SE also comes with all the usual reliable Apple support.
